Even as she struggled to take her last breaths on this Earth, my great aunt, “Tia Cathy,” had her nails done right. And that pretty much captures exactly who she was-an elegant, graceful, magnetic, hilarious woman. My Tia Cathy was born in a different time and era, the daughter of wealthy, aristocratic landowners in Nicaragua. Her life was like a Gabriel Garcia Marquez novel, and I always held her very dear in my heart.
On Saturday, I said bye to my Tia Cathy for the very last time, and yesterday-she passed away after 98 happy, tumultuous, but ultimately glorious years. While I’m going to miss my Tia Cathy deeply, viscerally, repeatedly-I know she’s in a better place-a place where she can look down and smile on me and our family. This post is a tribute to the life of my Tia Cathy-a true lady in life and in death.
